The well-known walking track through Burleigh Head National Park has officially reopened after it was temporarily closed due to safety concerns following a boulder fall.
The Oceanview Track was preemptively shut down due to anticipated showers that impacted the Gold Coast nearly two weeks ago. Shortly after the closure, heavy rain caused a large boulder to dislodge and roll onto the track, damaging a safety railing in the process.
In response, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) took immediate action to ensure the area was secure. A thorough ground inspection, complemented by a geotechnical survey and drone footage analysis, was conducted to assess the situation and implement necessary remediation works.
“Rangers were disappointed that dozens of people put their safety at risk by ignoring the closure at the weekend,” QPWS remarked in a statement released on Wednesday. The agency noted that while they endeavored to educate those who entered the closed area, they often collaborate with the Queensland Police Service to enforce compliance.
The QPWS has issued a reminder to the public regarding the critical importance of heeding park closures. “People who enter closed areas risk a $667.60 fine,” the statement noted, emphasizing the potential safety hazards that exist in these areas.
As the track is now accessible again, locals can once again enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Burleigh Head National Park, known for its stunning ocean views and diverse wildlife. However, the authorities stress the importance of following all posted signage and instructions from park rangers.
In light of this incident, park officials encourage visitors to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety while enjoying the natural beauty of the park.
