As the automotive landscape shifts, one vehicle has taken a prominent position in the world of off-road adventures: the Ford Maverick FX4. Combining the best of crossover amenities with the rugged capabilities of a pickup truck, the Maverick has become an appealing choice for outdoor enthusiasts. Kazmot Tegz, the owner of this personalized vehicle, has transformed his FX4 into a remarkable overland machine.
"I wanted something versatile and efficient that still had pickup utility," said Kazmot Tegz. His choice of the Ford Maverick is telling of the vehicle's unique attributes. "The Maverick is compact, fuel-efficient, and budget-friendly compared to larger trucks, but still capable with the right upgrades."
One of the core enhancements to this Maverick is its suspension system. To navigate off-road terrain effectively, Tegz replaced the factory suspension with higher-performing aftermarket components. "To bump up the clearance a little bit and gain more space in the wheel wells to mount larger tires, I installed Ford Ranger Lifts 2.25-inch spacers front and rear," he noted.
The vehicle now boasts a Bilstein TerraSport setup along with All Dogs Offroad HD Springs, further enhanced by Timbren Industries bump stops. These modifications not only provide a smoother ride but also bolster the truck’s resilience against rough paths, particularly over rocks and through deep potholes.
With the new suspension in place, Tegz opted for a significant upgrade to the wheels and tires as well. He chose Kenda Klever R/T 245/75R17 off-road tires, which measure about 31.5 inches in diameter. "Compared to the factory tires, it’s a 3-inch upgrade, which greatly increases ground clearance and off-road capability," he explained. This jump elevates the vehicle's stance by nearly four inches when combined with the lift kit, making it better suited for tackling diverse terrains.
What sets this build apart is not solely the undercarriage; the exterior boasts several practical modifications as well. A custom tube pre-runner bumper graces the front, housing powerful LED lights for improved visibility during night excursions. "The bumper features Tripler Lights Sentinel Elite 7’s for essential illumination," said Tegz, who clearly prioritizes both form and function in his build.
Underlining the essence of overland vehicles, the bed of Tegz's Maverick is a carefully curated space for adventure gear. A standout feature is the Packout USA camper, equipped with a clamshell tent and a versatile design that allows easy access through a swing-out rear door. "This setup is essential for quick access when you’re on the go," he remarked, highlighting the camper's practicality for spontaneous adventures.
Additionally, Tegz added the 270° Batwing awning to provide shaded space, essential for comfort during breaks from driving or when setting up camp. Rinsing off after a long day is also made easy with the Yakima 7-gallon Roadshower, paired with the Inspired Overland shower awning and a portable shower pump from Kakadu USA.
"Off-roading became a natural way to explore spots you just can’t reach on pavement," Tegz explained, revealing his motivations for pursuing this hobby. The blend of adventure and self-reliance drives many off-road enthusiasts, and for Tegz, each trail is an opportunity for a new experience.
Finally, power solutions are provided by the RTE USA 200aH Power Wall PRO unit, which, alongside a Renogy 2000 watt sine wave inverter and a DC-DC charger, ensures that Tegz can keep devices charged while off the grid.
Tegz's Ford Maverick FX4 stands as a testament to what a thoughtful build can accomplish. Combining practicality with adventure-ready features, this truck is not just a vehicle but an invitation to step beyond the everyday. As more enthusiasts recognize the versatility of vehicles like the Maverick, we can anticipate an exciting future for compact, off-road-capable vehicles in the overland community.
