Francois Cazzanelli, an experienced Italian mountaineer, has achieved a significant milestone by summiting Kimshung, a challenging peak standing at 6,781 meters. This ascent marks a triumphant moment after three prior attempts that had thwarted his efforts.
Cazzanelli first set his sights on Kimshung in the spring of 2015, later returning in the fall of 2016 and again in 2024 as part of a seven-member Italian team. Despite their combined efforts last year, they were unable to reach the summit, leaving Cazzanelli eager to try once more. "It felt like a long journey, but we had faith that we could do it this time," Cazzanelli remarked about the climbers’ resilience.
In this final attempt, Cazzanelli teamed up with Giuseppe Vidoni, who had scaled multiple peaks with him, along with Austrian climbers Benjamin Zoerer and Lukas Waldner. The team also included photographer Damiano Levati, who documented the expedition. They opted to keep their objective under wraps, avoiding any pre-climb pressure.
Kimshung, alternatively known as Tsangbu Ri, is situated in Langtang National Park, near the Tibetan border. Cazzanelli explained the peak's allure, noting that, "Like many climbers, we were drawn to the challenges Kimshung presented; it has a reputation that any climber must respect." Over the past decade, at least six teams have made attempts to conquer this daunting mountain.
On October 20, 2025, Cazzanelli and his team embarked on their push from a base camp at 5,450 meters. They climbed via the northeast face, achieving the summit at 12:30 PM. Impressively, they completed the 1,300-meter vertical ascent in just one day, returning back to the valley by 7 PM. "It was a grueling climb, but the view from the top was breathtaking. That moment made all our efforts worthwhile," said Vidoni.
The team graded their route as AI4 and M5, indicating the technical challenges they faced. "This climb tested us physically and mentally, but as soon as we stood atop Kimshung, we knew every moment of struggle had been justified," said Waldner.
Cazzanelli used his past experiences as fuel, embracing everything he had learned in his previous attempts. He's well-versed in high-altitude conditions and understands the adaptation required for such pursuits. "You never climb the same mountain twice; every ascent is a new challenge that tests your resolve," he stated while reflecting on his journey.
The ascent of Kimshung not only signifies personal success for Cazzanelli but also serves as an inspiration for fellow mountaineers. His persistence over the years exemplifies the dedication required in the world of climbing. "It’s about perseverance. Each failure brings you closer to success," he added.
This achievement comes at a time when high-altitude mountaineering is increasingly popular, with more climbers seeking to conquer formidable peaks around the globe. Experts have noted that while the allure of summit success is strong, the risks inherent in such endeavors remain ever-present.
Looking ahead, Cazzanelli has not ruled out further adventures in high-altitude climbing. The journey to Kimshung may have concluded, but the world of unexplored mountains remains vast and inviting. "Every mountain has its story, and I have stories yet to write," he concluded, embodying the spirit of a true explorer.
