Key Takeaways

  • 1.“This is so much more than a gym — it’s a home for connection, challenge and growth,” said Kristin Horowitz, CEO of The Pad.
  • 2.“We can’t wait for Santa Barbara to climb with us.
  • 3.“Raising the roof was especially long and tenuous because they had to keep the original roof,” explained Madison Milton-Smith, the gym’s operations manager.

The Pad Climbing Gym has officially launched its second site in Santa Barbara County, marking a significant milestone for the company that has been eager to establish a foothold in the area. Located in the Magnolia Shopping Center, the new gym spans more than 14,000 square feet, surpassing its original location in San Luis Obispo.

“This is so much more than a gym — it’s a home for connection, challenge and growth,” said Kristin Horowitz, CEO of The Pad. Her personal ties to Santa Barbara illuminate why this opening is especially meaningful for her. “We can’t wait for Santa Barbara to climb with us. My brother’s family lives here so I sort of grew up here. It means a lot to bring our community to one I have known and loved forever.”

Situated at 5160 Hollister Ave., the Santa Barbara location joins The Pad's existing gyms in San Luis Obispo and Binghamton, New York. Aiming to foster a sense of community, the gym will be open 24/7 for members and will accommodate the general public from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Importantly, all day-pass purchasers will also gain access to the adjoining BoardRoom training facility.

The construction work at The Pad has garnered attention for its innovative approach. As reported, parts of the original roof have been retained, leading to the creation of a unique mezzanine area. “Raising the roof was especially long and tenuous because they had to keep the original roof,” explained Madison Milton-Smith, the gym’s operations manager. “Construction has been going on for five years. They did some magic over there.”

The climbing gym features impressive 37-foot walls designed for roped climbing, and boasts a large arch dividing the climbing space. “There’s a huge fan spinning overhead, and routes are mapped out on the walls with different-colored climbing holds,” added Milton-Smith, highlighting the gym's thoughtful design.

The facility is not limited to just climbing; it includes workout equipment and a lounge area equipped with tables, a coffee station, and comfortable seating. “We have an entire kids’ area with rope climbing,” emphasized Milton-Smith. “On the panels, there are going to be narwhals and sea creatures.” This focus on the community extends to the unique design, tailored specifically for families and children.

With the Magnolia Shopping Center seeing a high turnover in tenants, the new climbing gym is expected to revitalize the area and bring greater attention to local businesses. The expected popularity of the gym could also help solidify the tight-knit community of climbers in the South Coast region. “In a lot of hobbies, you don’t have a community center like you do in climbing,” said Milton-Smith, underscoring the spirit of camaraderie in the sport.

Milton-Smith's journey to The Pad is a testament to her dedication to the climbing community. Originally hailing from Santa Cruz, she transitioned from managing and route-setting at another climbing gym to take this opportunity in Santa Barbara. “I was supposed to start a program down here for my master’s, and then deferred a year because I was so psyched about this job,” she said, expressing enthusiasm about the team she’s joined.

Recognized for its environmentally friendly policies and positive work culture, The Pad has made strides in fostering a supportive environment for its employees. Most recently, the company was awarded the title of 2025 National Leader on Leave for its progressive paid leave policy by the National Partnership for Women & Families.

The community anticipates an influx of local residents and students keen to explore the new climbing gym. “I can’t wait to climb here,” said Milton-Smith, who is eager for others to experience the gym. “I’m so excited for everybody to come and join the fam.” This spirit of inclusion reflects the overarching goal of The Pad, which strives to create a welcoming space for climbers of all levels.
