Deer Valley Resort in Utah has launched an ambitious expansion project, marking one of the largest ski resort developments in history. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the skiing experience by adding nearly 100 new runs, 10 new chairlifts, and the construction of a luxurious new ski village base.
"We're bringing world-class skiing to a new level with this expansion," said Deer Valley's General Manager, Bob Wheaton. This project, dubbed "Expanded Excellence," will increase the resort's skiable terrain from approximately 800 hectares to over 2317 hectares, elevating the resort to the fourth largest in the United States.
Deer Valley's reputation as North America’s premier ski destination has been solidified for over a decade, with its dedication to excellent service, pristine slopes, and a skier-only policy. "Every visitor deserves to feel like royalty on the mountain," Wheaton added.
The last major expansion at Deer Valley occurred 15 years ago, introducing just one new lift and adding 80 hectares of terrain. In stark contrast, the current undertaking is set to increase ski runs from 100 to 238 and boosts the number of lifts from 25 to 37, including a state-of-the-art 10-person gondola equipped with heated seats.
"This is an unprecedented growth for any ski resort. Expanding our terrain like this hasn't been done before," said Wheaton. For skiers, this represents a substantial enhancement in their winter sports opportunities.
As a bonus, holders of the Ikon Pass from Australia can enjoy seven days of skiing at Deer Valley, which remains one of the most accessible ski resorts in North America, located just a short drive from Salt Lake City International Airport.
After getting a first-hand look at the freshly carved trails during last season's sneak peek of the upcoming expansion, it's evident that the effort will be worth it. "Skiing the new terrain showcases a perfect mix from smooth groomers to exciting tree shots," said veteran skier Sarah Donner. "For both beginners and advanced skiers, this new layout feels like a free exploration of wilderness without leaving the slopes."
The latest ski base, Deer Valley East Village, represents the first new base area to open in the U.S. in over a decade. Targeted as a home base for the expansion, it complements the existing Snow Park, Silver Lake, and Empire Pass areas.
Upon entering the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, visitors are met with an impressive lobby and stunning alpine views. "The Hyatt’s design reflects both luxury and the beauty of the surrounding environment," said Michael Houghton, the hotel manager.
As East Village reaches completion, plans indicate additional high-quality hotels will join the Grand Hyatt, further enhancing accommodation options for visitors.
This significant expansion reflects Deer Valley’s commitment to providing an unparalleled skiing experience, combining luxury, accessibility, and diversity in terrain. The completion of the project in the coming years promises to redefine the resort’s landscape and attract a broader range of skiing enthusiasts, solidifying its position as a top winter destination.
